What is group therapy?
Group involves anywhere between 6-8 members and 1-2 leaders who will meet each week for 75-90 minutes. Groups offer members the opportunity to learn more about themselves and others in a safe space and can often lead to increased self-awareness, a better sense of self, decreased feelings of isolation, and improved social and problem-solving skills.
What are process groups?
Process groups go deeper than support, skills, or psychoeducational groups as they invite members to share their “here and now” reactions to other members and interactions occurring within the group. The opportunity to respectfully “be real” helps members better understand themselves, how they come across to others, and often leads to improvements in interpersonal functioning outside of group. As such, process groups allow members to get in touch with their more raw, unformulated, and underlying reactions that are often not said out loud or quickly pushed away outside of group in order to respect social norms. Group norms encourage members to respectfully (when possible) voice uncomfortable thoughts and feelings so members can be more deeply known, understood, and understand what gets activated for them through the group dynamics. More information about group therapy can be found here.
How can I join one of your groups?
In order to join one of my groups, I require members to do a 45 minute consultation/intake session with me. It is often recommended that members join group after having done individual therapy, but this is not a firm requirement. Members must make arriving on time, weekly attendance with infrequent absences, and staying for the duration of the entire group a priority.
How long do members typically stay in group?
Members are encouraged to stay in a process or interpersonal group for at least one to two years. Members can decide when it makes sense to transition out of a group and they are encouraged to give the group several weeks advanced notice if they are planning to leave.
